The INTENT of History at Glebe

At Glebe Primary School we believe an ambitious core values based history education along with the development of our pupils’ positive mindsets, will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. The enquiry based topics inspire our pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and develops their culture capital. Teaching equips our pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift through arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

The History curriculum has been made for Glebe by Glebe. It has been organised and researched from working closely with Shoreham Academy as well as experts from the KeyStageHistory platform. In the classroom you will see big questions being answered, real life connections being made, shared vocabulary used, inclusivity for all pupils and a real thirst for learning.  Review and progress (RAP) quiz sessions are used to enhance the pupil’s knowledge from short term to long term as well as a range of valued experiences.

Spotlight within History - Year 3

CAVE PAINTING: To kick start our Stone Age topic the children in Year 3 went on an exicting cave painting hunt around the school. They found lots of different types of images that ancient humans painted. These included horses, hands and even woolly mammoths! The children then used this inspiration to create their very own cave paintings at the start of our topic! "The children were very excited a hunt around the school for the cave art and loved creating their own!"  Mrs McHugh, Year 3 teacher.

EGYPTOLOGIST VISIT: As part of our learning on Ancient Egypt, the children very lucky to have been visited by an Egyptology expert! They came and spoke to us about their incredible work as an Egyptologist and explored the discovery of Tutankhamun by Howard Carter. This inspired the children with their own letters in the same style as Howard Carter's amazing discovery.

Spotlight within History - Year 3
The children absolutely loved finding out about all the different areas of how humans have developed through the Stone Age. They even got to touch some Stone Age artefacts including a mammoth's tooth!

Mr Pavely, Year 3 Teacher

Year 3 have been learning all about the Stone Age to the Iron Age. They have really developed their investigative Historical skills by using artefacts to find out what life was really like back then! They have studied the change from the nomadic hunter gatherer lifestyle of early humans to a more farming based lifestyle of growing crops and domesticating animals. The children have also been thinking about the big questions of the time, including the mysteries surrounding Stonehenge and the sophisticated development of Danebury Hill  - an Iron Age Hill Fort.

Year 3 even had an experience day with a local archaeologist where the children were able look at some real artefacts from the Stone Age, including a real mammoth tusk and tooth! The children also got to experience what it is like to be an archaeologist by digging up some bones, pieces of pot and other artefacts in a sand try.
