Curriculum Intent
At our school, the teaching of French aims to develop confident, curious and enthusiastic language learners who value and appreciate different cultures and communities around the world. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, we seek to Nurture children's confidence in communication, Inspire a love of languages and cultural understanding, and Challenge pupils to develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as they progress through Key Stage 2.
Learning a modern foreign language opens doors to new experiences and perspectives. We want our pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to communicate in French while fostering respect, curiosity and appreciation for French-speaking cultures across the world.
Our French Curriculum
From Year 3 to Year 6, pupils follow the Language Angels programme, which provides progressive and engaging learning opportunities. Each unit of learning is structured around four key parts:
Part 1: Vocabulary
Children are introduced to new vocabulary and learn how to pronounce words accurately through listening to and repeating native French speakers on the Language Angels platform. This supports correct pronunciation and helps pupils develop confidence when speaking French.
Part 2: Speaking and Listening
Pupils practise and rehearse words, phrases and sentences orally through whole-class activities, paired work and collaborative tasks. Regular opportunities to listen and respond in French help children build fluency, confidence and effective communication skills.
Part 3: Writing
Children make links between spoken and written French by learning how vocabulary is represented in written form. As they progress, pupils develop their understanding of sentence structure, grammar and language patterns, enabling them to write increasingly complex phrases and sentences independently.
Part 4: Distance Learning and Retrieval Practice
To ensure knowledge is retained and embedded in long-term memory, pupils revisit previously taught units through distance learning activities and retrieval practice. This regular revision strengthens recall, deepens understanding and supports long-term progression in language learning.
