The INTENT of design technology at Glebe

At Glebe Primary School we believe an ambitious core values. Not only will they gain life skills but also to be inspired to see themselves as an engineer or a chef or a carpenter or an architect or clothes designer or a graphic designer or mechanics that they will grow up to be. We wish to give the children valued hands on experiences with materials, tools, ingredients and the skills to develop products.

Our organised and researched D&T units are designed by Glebe teachers for Glebe. They all begin with learning a bank of new vocabulary they can use throughout the project to discuss the process with their classmates. They will learn to plan and design their product comparing it to existing models and products available in the world around them. They will then have an opportunity to develop their skills and decide which methods will work for them. It may be joining materials, drilling, sawing, sewing, kneading – this will prepare them for any challenge that arises when it comes to complete their very own products!

In the classroom you will see big questions being answered, real life connections being made, shared vocabulary used, inclusivity for all pupils and a real thirst for learning. When the children assemble their final product they will problem solve with one another and work together as a team to complete their task. These are perfect opportunities to utilise their positive mind-set and remain resilient even if the task proves difficult. They will consider ideas for improving their own product and also give feedback to others in a constructive and nurturing manner.

Spotlight within Design Technology - Year 5

As part of their fairground unit, Year 5 asked the question, how can we make a moving ride for our fairground ? They took a look at how fairground rides work and then explored other models made by other schools. They had the challenge of designing a fairground ride that can spin using a pulley and a motor! So they started off their project by learning all the vocabulary they would need. With this knowledge in mind they designed their own chair - o - plane!
