Reception

Life in Reception - the start of your child's school adventure

The Reception year is one of the most important in your child’s educational journey. It is paramount to lay the foundations to become a life-long learner. The skills taught in Reception are comparable to the foundations for a house – we need to make them nice and strong!

We have an exciting and engaging curriculum that encourages children to become resourceful, inquisitive, communicative learners who will always ‘give it a go’ and challenge themselves to be successful.

The Learning Environment

We have a great Early Years department that is purpose built for young children with a large outdoor space and good sized classrooms. There are three classes that make up the Early Years department with a maximum of 30 children in each class. Although your child is allocated to an individual class they have the opportunity to integrate with other children during the school day.

Our Curriculum

Children at Glebe experience the seven areas of learning through a balance of whole class/group teaching and play based learning.  This is through the children’s interests, topics, themes, continuous provision activities, and phonics.

Learning is carefully planned by the staff to support communication and language development; personal, social and emotional development; and physical development as well as literacy, mathematics, understanding of the world and expressive arts and design.

We provide and are continually developing a high quality curriculum in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage guidance. The curriculum is wide and varied, and builds on your child’s existing knowledge, skills and experiences.

Our YR Curricular Goals

Here are our YR Curricular Goals. We strive to ensure that all YR children are able to achieve these before they leave Reception.

YR Curricular Goals

Developing a love of reading in Reception

At Glebe we focus on enthusing a love of reading in our pupils.  An interest in books is developed by sharing songs, stories and rhymes, fostering opportunities to talk and re-enact stories or follow children’s interests through information books. Books are shared with the children daily and children are motivated to look at and talk about story and information books in their child initiated play by utilising books in all areas of the provision. Throughout child initiated learning time, children have the opportunity to explore books of their own interest in a quiet and inviting book area. Books are changed regularly based on the topic and the children’s interest.

The children will take home a phonic book that matches the phonics they are being taught in school and the child is encouraged to read this independently. They will also take a home a library book which they can share with their family at home on a regular basis.

Read Write Inc is the phonic programme that is followed in Reception and small group guided reading sessions are started when the child is able to recognise the majority of the 26 letter sounds of the alphabet and is able to orally blend. During this time children are supported by a teacher to develop their speaking and reading skills and to promote positive reading and learning behaviours.

The Top 10 books to learn by heart

Throughout the year in YR the children learn a selection of 10 books by heart. These books are mostly repetitive and rather like songs! This makes them easier for children to join in with so that the experience of reading becomes interactive and the children begin to learn the story as they are read to. In each book there is lots to discuss so that the children understand the vocabulary as well as what is happening.

Parental Partnerships

In Reception, we work in partnership with parents/carers to promote the learning and development of all children. Parents/carers are a child’s most important educators, therefore, we endeavour to involve and support parents in as many opportunities as we can.

Class Dojo

In Reception we use Class Dojo which is a secure online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time with us.

This system allows us to work with parents and carers to share information and record the children’s play and learning in and outside of the classroom.

Class Dojo is a website which can be accessed on a computer or laptop, and also on any Apple or Android device such as a tablet or smart phone.

WOW Moments 2024-25

Reception

To celebrate all of our learning through the Christmas period, Reception and Nursery were very excited to travel and explore our local area of Southwick Square, in an effort to deliver our letters to Santa.

In pairs, we travelled up to the high street – pointing out the festive decorations and places we have visited in Southwick such as the post office and the Pirate Park. As the post box drew close, our excitement grew and we all posted our letter.

After our trip, we all shared our hopes and dreams of what Santa may deliver on Christmas day!

Our Reception Planning Overview 2024-25

As we like to plan based around the children interests, our key themes/ texts may change as we progress through the year. However, below you find outlined the key objects we will be focusing on each half term.
