Children and staff at Glebe celebrated WBD by dressing up as explorers to go on a fact-finding mission in non-fiction books. The idea was inspired by Glebe’s Patron of Reading, Vashti Hardy and there were plenty of crew members around from the Sky Ship Aurora, which features in Vashti’s books, Brightstorm and Darkwhispers.

The day started with an exciting assembly to celebrate all things reading related at Glebe, including watching a clip from the Blue Peter Book Awards, where Vashti Hardy won best story for Wildspark.  Vashti is a former pupil of Glebe Primary school herself, so this was a doubly proud moment for Glebe. Head Teacher, Joy Waelend, said “We are thrilled that Vashti has won this award, she is an inspiration to the children at Glebe.”

The children went on to make their own ‘books with facts’, which they shared with parents and carers who were invited in to school at the end of the day.

The Southwick School also has a Patron Of Illustration, Steven Lenton. Children have been busy creating ‘a room in a box’ for the hugely popular, The Nothing To See Here Hotel, written by Steven Butler and illustrated by Steven Lenton, who are going to choose the winners of the competition. Deputy Head, Clem Lewis said “It’s super to see how much imagination and creativity the children have put into their designs.”
