Positive Mindset: The Badge Challenge

Can you collect them all?

The purpose of the Positive Mindset Challenges

  • To encourage our children to increase the depth of their understanding in each of the focused areas
  • To motivate and reward the children's efforts
  • To provide our parents/carers an opportunity to engage in their child's learning

How the Positive Mindset Challenges work

Firstly, it is important to point out that these challenges are totally optional. There is no requirement for children to take part.

Each week in the first half of spring, all of our pupils (from Reception to Year 6) will be focusing on a different strand within our Positive Mindset lessons. The week will begin with a whole school assembly to introduce the topic and will then be followed up in class at some point that week where further discussions and tasks will enhance their understanding of the virtue. The children will also be provided with key phrases to help praise, guide or correct the children's displayed behaviour.

At the end of the week, class teachers will set the optional Positive Mindset Challenge of the week for them to complete in their own time. This will be shared with you through the website and in your child's home learning book. Once completed, children are asked to hand these into their teacher for Mr Lewis to look at and reward them with a positive mindset badge.

These awards are not only based on the actual physical work produced but also to acknowledge the extra thought and effort demonstrated by the pupils.

Positive Mindset Challenge 5:

Problem Solving

  • Reception Challenge: Co-operative classrooms. This task will be completed at school.
  • Year 1 Challenge: Team Work. The children will be given a 'teamwork' sheet for them to find out more about the work of teams in our local area. They should then draw a picture of the team working together to help each other. Alternatively, they could draw a picture of a team they belong to (for example, their class).
  • Year 2 Challenge: Animal Teamwork. Ask your child about the video they watched at school about ants and how they used teamwork to solve their problem. Explain that many animals live in groups and work together, for example, honey bees, wolves and meerkats. They are to pick one of these animals, or find an example of their own, and fins out more about them. They can record anything they find out on the 'Animal teamwork' sheet using pictures or words.
  • Year 3 Challenge: How to be a good leader. The children are to create a four or five step instructional poster on how to be a good leader. They can either use the 'How to be a good leader' template or create their own poster.
  • Year 4 Challenge: Planning a trip! The children are going to be project managers organising an imagery trip to a nearby attraction of their choice. They will be provided with a planning trip sheet with questions to think about and solve.
  • Year 5 Challenge: Shopping Trip. During your weekly shopping this week, the children should look and discuss with you if any of the plastic packaging could be avoided, or replaced with alternatives such as paper or card. If any children go on the shopping trip with you, encourage them to make notes of what items are available without plastic packaging. An online supermarket might be a useful alternative to an actual visit. Children can then record their findings on the template or present in their own unique way!
  • Year 6 Challenge: O-soji. Children can practise o-soji at home over the next week. Children must ask for permission before starting any work. The children will be provided with 'o-soji' at home' sheet to record their work or they can present their work in their own unique way.
