The INTENT of design technology at Glebe

At Glebe Primary School we believe an ambitious core values. Not only will they gain life skills but also to be inspired to see themselves as an engineer or a chef or a carpenter or an architect or clothes designer or a graphic designer or mechanics that they will grow up to be. We wish to give the children valued hands on experiences with materials, tools, ingredients and the skills to develop products.

Our organised and researched D&T units are designed by Glebe teachers for Glebe. They all begin with learning a bank of new vocabulary they can use throughout the project to discuss the process with their classmates. They will learn to plan and design their product comparing it to existing models and products available in the world around them. They will then have an opportunity to develop their skills and decide which methods will work for them. It may be joining materials, drilling, sawing, sewing, kneading – this will prepare them for any challenge that arises when it comes to complete their very own products!

In the classroom you will see big questions being answered, real life connections being made, shared vocabulary used, inclusivity for all pupils and a real thirst for learning. When the children assemble their final product they will problem solve with one another and work together as a team to complete their task. These are perfect opportunities to utilise their positive mind-set and remain resilient even if the task proves difficult. They will consider ideas for improving their own product and also give feedback to others in a constructive and nurturing manner.

Spotlight within Design Technology - Year 4

Year 4 had so much fun when making their catapults for their ‘Roman’ topic. The children had to research and learn all about what different catapults had been used. They looked at designing a catapult that would allow them to fire a small projectile (a small counter). The children worked in small groups and built their catapult using different resources. They then tested them to see how they would work. Some found the elastic bands needed tightening or the lever and arm would not work. Well done Year 4! A great DT project completed.

Spotlight within Design Technology - Year 1

During our DT lessons you will see big questions being answered, real life connections being made, shared vocabulary used, inclusivity for all pupils and a real thirst for learning. Here are some examples of the children’s excellent learning in ‘Moving Vehicles' in Year 1
