Year 2: Polar Explorer Day

Year 2 had a brilliant start to our new topic ‘Fire and Ice’ with our Explorer Day on Friday 10th January. The children came to school dressed in fantastic polar explorer outfits complete with binoculars, compasses and even a few sledges to slide through the snow! During the day the children learnt about the wildlife photographer Steve Bloom and his trip to the Arctic and Antarctic to photograph the animals. The children loved learning about the different animals, especially the arctic fox and watching a video clip of one hunting for lemmings. The children then went on to learn about the hot and cold parts of our world and the seven continents. Did you know emperor penguins live in Antarctica all year long? Emperor penguins are about the same height as a year 2 child!

In the afternoon the children were blown away when they heard about Earnest Shackleton’s adventure across Antarctica, which went horribly wrong! Luckily despite being stranded for over a year in Antarctica no members of the crew died! We then went on our own polar adventure and made our own shelters to keep out the freezing Antarctic wind. Once they were in their shelters the children rationed out biscuits to keep them alive on our polar adventure!
