The INTENT of French at Glebe

At Glebe Primary School, our high-quality French curriculum is part of our whole school values based curriculum. Children are offered a broad range of learning units throughout their time in our school. They are also given the opportunity hear French language spoken by a native speaker in every lesson through our use of the ‘Language Angels’ French classroom support program.

The children are then inspired to speak and to write French with confidence, fluency and spontaneity. All of our children are well supported and challenged so that every child makes great progress.

In learning French it is also essential that we take the opportunity to learn about French culture and history. As such, every year group finds out about a different French speaking country around the world - about why these countries speak French and how that makes up a key part of their unique culture. In doing this we are truly nurturing our pupils to become global citizens.

Added extras in our French teaching

As we've mentioned above, each year group in KS2 at Glebe focusses on a different country that speaks French either as an official or an unofficial language:

Year 3 - France

Year 4 - Martinique

Year 5 - Morocco

Year 6 - Canada

To immerse our children in the impact of French culture globally, every half term the children will have one lesson in which they learn something interesting about their French speaking country. To make our learning as relevant as possible, teachers will always try to link this to their current topic to explore that in a different context. Whenever this is possible, this learning really adds an extra dimension to the children's depth of understanding about their topic. For example, when Year 6 learn about Word War II they learn about how Canada were involved in it in more detail. When Year 3's topic learning is about the sea, they find out about Jacques Cousteau, the famous French diver, explorer and marine biologist.

At Glebe it is our mission to make learning happen in a real context, one that can be explored by our pupils in a meaningful way. By adding this extra to our French curriculum, we allow our pupils to see that French is a real language that is spoken widely across the world. They can also see that by learning to speak French, they open the door to becoming a true, global citizen.

Spotlight within French - Year 5 -Morocco Country Focus

Year 5 focus on Morocco and have found out SO MUCH! They learnt lots of exciting facts about Morocco and now understand why they speak French. They then learnt about the varied geography of the country and found out about the incredible Atlas mountains and then discovered that even the Vikings visited Morocco in 859AD during the Year 5 topic all about the Vikings. Take a look at some of their wonderful work!

Spotlight within French - Year 6 - World War II

Clever old Year 6 tied their Spring term World War II topic learning in with their French lessons and the children were able to learn lots of facts and information about the war and practice their excellent French language skills at the same time. They learnt lots of vocabulary, had plenty of time to practice speaking and listening and then developed their writing skills too. Just have a look at their work to see how well they did – well done Year 6, super learning!
