The INTENT of PE at Glebe

At Glebe Primary School, Physical Education is underpinned by our ambitious core values led curriculum and is supported by the Jasmine Real PE approach.

Children in all year groups will experience research led lessons organised and sequenced around 6 key learning cogs (Cognitive, Personal, Creative, Social, Health and Fitness and Physical). One cog forms the focus of each half term’s learning which are organised to be revisited and built upon as the children move through the school. These cogs also promote valuable transferrable skills into other subjects and wider life to nurture and inspire themselves and others. Each cog is also linked to a big question which is referred to throughout the unit to allow the children to reflect upon their performance. Details of these cogs and their progression can be found below.

Over the course of a year, lessons also equip children with 12 fundamental physical movement skills that can be applied across the sporting spectrum – these skills are reviewed and progressed upon (RAP) each year and challenge the children to achieve their personal best. These fundamental skills and their progression can be found below.

In line with the National Curriculum, children also experience learning to swim in Years 2, 3 and 4 while physical activity is also encouraged and promoted in wider school life through the Daily Mile and active breaktimes. Children also have the opportunity to experience sport-specific clubs in our wide-ranging after school provision and regularly engage in inter-school competition against local schools in the Shoreham Academy cluster.

Spotlight with Physical Education - Year 4

Year 4: Swimming: Year 4 completed their 10 weeks of swimming sessions in the Autumn Term at Wadurs - all children at Glebe are offered a total of 32 weekly sessions in their time at the school with the goal of being able to swim 25 metres by the end of Year 6. Robyn W said, "We tried different strokes like breaststroke and dolphin in the deep end of the pool. I know I had improved at the end of the lessons because I could swim 25 metres which is the whole length!"
I improved my back crawl and front crawl and know I had more control as I didn't splash as much. I had to start off slow but got faster as I got more confident.

Spotlight within Physical Education - Year 6

Year 6: Seated Volleyball and Endball
Year 6 have been using their creativity to use tactics in team games such as seated volleyball and endball (an invasion game). Eliza L said, "In endball, you have to mark you opponents so that they cannot pass to each other - you have to watch both the ball and your player. You should be springy on your toes so that you can react quickly."
Fletcher I-H said, "When you play seated volleyball, you should make sure you have control over the ball when you strike it otherwise you will lose a point. It is important to spot where the spaces are to put the ball into as well as communicate with your team mates so that you know who's going to hit it back over."
