Glebe Primary School

Art Workshop

The fabrics are very beautiful and detailed. They all have lovely bright colours.

On Thursday 14thFebruary 2019, some of our most talented artists from Glebe Primary School were chosen to take part in an art workshop. We looked at some fantastic artwork by the artist Yinka Shonibare and created some of our own paintings inspired by him. Shonibare is a British-Nigerian artist living in the UK. His work explores cultural identity and the relationship between Africa and Europe. Most of his work features brightly coloured ‘African’ fabric that he buys from Brixton market in London. We looked carefully at the fantastic patterns and colours on the African fabric and used them to inspire our paintings. Working as a team, we have started to produce a diptych inspired by his piece ‘Maxa’ which he made in 2003. Despite being partially paralysed, Shonibare has continued to make artwork with the help of assistants that he directs. We were really impressed with his perseverance and dedication to his art.

I like the circles and the patterns. Some of them look like faces.
