Our NIC values
- Art & Design
Art & Design intent
At Glebe Primary School we believe that the visual arts enable children to become visually literate and allow children to express themselves artistically and creatively. We believe it is important to teach the children about significant artists, the way art has evolved through history and how it has been a tool for people to express their views, opinions and experiences. We believe it is important to equip children with the tools, knowledge and skills for them to create their own pieces of art that are inspiring, engaging and informative and provoke a response from the audience. We believe that by developing our pupils’ positive mindsets we will help the children to develop excellent skills and techniques in Art and Design by supporting them to be reflective of their work and support their understanding that hard work and determination will help them to improve. We believe that Art and Design can signpost career pathways to creative, cultural and heritage industries as well as a creative subject. Visual arts form a part of creative industries that are expected to continue to expand. We want every child to have these opportunities and to become more inquisitive about the world and their environment. We want them to see and use their imagination and understanding and express visually how arts have shaped our history, how it is currently viewed and how it will shape their future.Read More
At Glebe Primary school we recognise and embrace the technology rich world we, our learners and their families find ourselves in. Through a hands on based computing curriculum we aim to offer our children an immersive and meaningful learning to lay the foundation of our children to becoming inspiring creators as well as nurturing consumer of technology. We aim utilise various resources both technology based and hands on, to teach children about physical computing and how these skills can be applied to many areas of their learning not just within the subject of computing. Our new learning unit of Microsoft Skills aims to teach children the basic skills of using Word, PowerPoint and Excel, which are built upon each year at Glebe. This combined with new Chromebooks we have arriving soon, we will be more fully equipped than ever to support the children of Glebe to be creative, to understand and to be safe when using computers.Read More
At Glebe we strive to make education and learning enriching and exciting whilst being deeply rooted in creatively planned and dynamically delivered lessons. As such, in Literacy it is our goal to ensure that every child in our school confidently develops their reading, speaking and writing by being exposed to texts that capture their imagination and by valued and unique experiences that can be used as a springboard to develop their incredible ideas. This ethos begins from their first day in Reception and follows every child through their journey throughout the school in the years to come. We Nurture, Inspire and Challenge our children so that their natural enthusiasm for learning is captured and honed with a mission to ensure that they become lifelong, passionate and independent learners. At Glebe we value Literacy so much that even our classes are named after important Literary figures! Each class is named after either a famous poet, an illustrator or an author. Have a look at the name of your child's class and explore some of that individual's work together at home to further enrich their experience and knowledge!
To support our children even further, our younger learners develop their phonics knowledge through a very successful program called Read Write Inc (RWI). While this year we have introduced a new and incredibly effective way to learn about writing called 'The Write Stuff' which has been developed by the British expert Jane Considine. At Glebe we are always reflecting on and developing what we do and this year looks like it'll be the best yet!Read More
At Glebe Primary School we believe a high-quality French education along with the development of our pupils’ positive mindsets will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of a different language as well as embrace challenges, respond to next steps, learn from their mistakes and realise that with hard work and determination they can improve. Learning another language inspires our pupils’ curiosity to know more about the world outside of their experiences, and this provides an opening into other cultures. Languages help our pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.Read More
'Geography' literally means 'Earth Story'. At Glebe Primary School we believe that high-quality geography education inspires an enduring curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. The positive mindset ethos at Glebe encourages pupils to be inquiring, enthused and adventurous as they learn about the world around them.
We will nurture a sense of place in our world, firstly by learning about our immediate locality of Southwick and Sussex, and then go onto study and compare significant global locations. Teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world will help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. They will learn key geographical skills such as mapping and fieldwork, and use a range of maps, atlases and digital technology to explore their town, country, continent and world.
At Glebe we will foster a deep respect for the natural environment and educate our school community to be mindful of the impact of humans. Pupils will learn about the positive changes that they themselves can implement so as to contribute towards tackling climate change. We want our pupils to be able to continue 'Earth's Story' as responsible, well informed and ably equipped global citizens.Read More
At Glebe Primary School we believe a high-quality history education along with the development of our pupils’ positive mindsets will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It inspires our pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching equips our pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift through arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.Read More
At Glebe we endeavour to make learning rich and exciting while keeping it creative and dynamic so the children are engaged in all areas of mathematical education. In maths, it is our goal to ensure that every child in our school confidently develops their number and calculation skills by being amerced in a rich curriculum. From when they enter our doors in Reception, we want the children to have a love of number that continues throughout their time at Glebe. We will Nurture that love of learning in maths through challenging the children to grasp the basic number knowledge from an early age though counting and day to day exposure to number. Through Glebe Keys, Times Tables Rockstars, Numbots and arithmetic as well as daily maths lessons, the children will have fun challenging and developing their mathematical thinking. We want to inspire the children to have the determination to exceed their expectations in maths and our mastery style of teaching will help them achieve this.
We have invested in ‘Power Maths’ to support the children in their learning of maths through mastery and we know that the visual and practical based learning will continue to help the children succeed. Let’s break that stigma of not being good at maths and Nurture, Inspire and Challenge our children into becoming outstanding mathematicians.Read More
At Glebe, we believe, 'Music feeds the soul!' Our vision for Music is that the children leave Glebe with a bank of Musical terminology and understanding, an appreciation of a broad range of music, along with the confidence to proudly showcase their learning to an audience. Across the year groups, each half term has an Inspire focus on a particular artist, band, composer, instrument or style of music. From this, a piece of music will be either learned or composed and practised in preparation for their final Showcase - always to an audience. Watch this space for fantastic performances and incredibly, musically talented children!Read More

- Religious education
Relgious education INTENT
At Glebe Primary School we believe that high-quality Religious Education inspires our young children to learn about a variety of different religions. We strive to make education and learning enriching and exciting! Religious Education is concerned to promote, through an encounter with Christianity and other religions, the pupil’s search for values, meaning and purpose. We encourage our children to be nurturing, inspiring and challenging within Religious Education, as we ensure they all show respect to others, discover new things and see things from different views. In KS1, children begin to look at a variety of religions, focusing on celebrations and rituals. In KS2, Glebe offers a wide range of learning opportunities about the world’s religions including deeper understanding of the origin of those religions and key stories and teachings. Each class has their own RE books that includes wonderful work from each of the children. Within Religious Education, children will also enjoy an array of creative activities and visitors!Read More
Science at Glebe Primary School is founded within the development of our pupils’ positive mindsets and inspires pupils’ enquiry and understanding of the world around them. We believe that our high-quality science education allows the pupils to develop thoughtful responses and questions about the plant and animal life, the formation of and features of the Earth as well as considering different materials and forces. It is through the discovery of these and other subject areas that the pupils’ at Glebe develop their working scientifically skills where they are able to ask difficult questions and create a variety of ways to explore and examine these through observation, pattern seeking, identify, classifying and grouping, comparative and fair testing and research using secondary sources.Read More
At Glebe Primary, we aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding of the following:
- Developing self-confidence, responsibility and personal achievement.
- Preparing to play an active role as citizens of Britain and the world and understanding and respecting British Values.
- Developing a healthy & safe lifestyle; physically, mentally and emotionally.
- Developing positive, healthy relationships and respecting the differences between people.
- Preparing to tackle challenges with resilience and perseverance.
- Develop an understanding of morals in order to make positive, informed decisions.
- Understanding consequences of choices and actions.
- Understanding how to keep safe and having a range of strategies to overcome difficult or worrying situations, as well as knowing what help is available to them and how to access it.
We aim to provide a range of inspiring opportunities for children to develop themselves, not just academically, but in a broad and balanced way. We strive for all children to develop a strong sense of identity, to grow in confidence and have an informed view of the world they live in; ensuring that they are able to thrive as they progress through school and beyond. With support, guidance and nurture, children develop an awareness of others’ and the impact their choices may have. We encourage children to develop their confidence, talents and skills, to become effective individuals, motivated learners and active citizens. We want to prepare our pupils for the future by encouraging the development of characteristics for life such as a love of learning, resilience, integrity, team work, critical thinking and independence; with an emphasis on adopting a ‘growth mindset’, this key aspect underpins PSHE sessions at Glebe. During ‘Big Question’ lessons, we strive to promote rich discussion rooted with relevant real world examples that our children can relate to. We challenge children to express their ideas and opinions and encourage positive, respectful debate; being mindful of the views and experiences of others’.
Curriculum provision for P.S.H.E. is provided through:
- Discrete PSHE curriculum time in the form of ‘The Big Question’ lessons – these tackle a key theme or discussion topic which are consistent across all year groups each week.
- Wider Curriculum & cross curricular links: PSHE underpins all we do at Glebe, key skills can be applied to a wide range of situations, problem solving, critical thinking, empathy towards others and so on; these are used by us all day to day. PSHE principals are explored during many aspects of the curriculum, internet safety in computing, physical health and lifestyle choices in science etc.
- Special events: there are a number of special events that become an area of focus during ‘Big question’ lessons, for instance, children in need, anti-bullying week, internet safety day, black history month and so on. During these sessions, we explore key issues that underpin the specific occasion.
Sex and Relationships Education
In EYFS/KS1 lessons aid children to develop an awareness of positive relationships, respect of different family make-ups, the responsibility of others to care for us and provide a safe and supportive environment. In lower key stage 2 these issues are explored further with an emphasis on building and maintaining strong, healthy relationships, as well as conflict resolution and respect of others’ belies and viewpoints. In upper key stage two we offer discrete teaching of essential life lessons regarding sex and relationships with an emphasis on making informed, responsible decisions and how to keep themselves safe. The objective of sex and relationship education is to help and support young people through their physical, emotional and moral development. A successful programme, firmly embedded in PSHE, helps young people learn to respect themselves and others and move with confidence from childhood through adolescence into adulthood by preparing pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the sex and relationship education provided at school except for those parts included in the statutory curriculum.Read More
- Design technology
Design technology intent
We wish to give the children hands on experience with materials, tools, ingredients and the skills to develop products. Not only will they gain life skills but also to be inspired to see themselves as an engineer or a chef or a carpenter or an architect or clothes designer or a graphic designer or mechanics that they will grow up to be.
Our D&T units all begin with learning a bank of new vocabulary they can use throughout the project to discuss the process with their classmates. They will learn to plan and design their product comparing it to existing models and products available in the world around them. They will then have an opportunity to develop their skills and decide which methods will work for them. It may be joining materials, drilling, sawing, sewing, kneading – this will prepare them for any challenge that arises when it comes to complete their very own products!
When the children assemble their final product they will problem solve with one another and work together as a team to complete their task. These are perfect opportunities to utilise their positive mindset and remain resilient even if the task proves difficult. They will consider ideas for improving their own product and also give feedback to others in a constructive and nurturing manner.Read More
